Bongo (U/E), June 27, GNA – The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), in the Bongo District has presented assorted relief items to about 15 households and institutions affected by a rain storm a fortnight ago.
The institutions that benefitted from the relief support included the Soe Senior High School, Sabliga and the Apuwongo Primary Schools. They received packets of roofing sheets, while the households were given mattresses, plastic buckets, insecticide treated mosquito nets, used clothes and some bags of cement.
Mr Clement Akongo, Bongo District Director of NADMO, said the items cost about GHc7,100.00 and that, though the items may not be adequate enough to satisfy the needs of the victims, it was the best support NADMO could give them now, as it solicits for more support from government and other philanthropists.
The Bongo District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, who presented the items on behalf of the NADMO, said the victims suffered from the devastation of the rainstorm that occurred on May 29, 2017 and that of a fortnight ago.
He said it took a long time to make the presentation because the Assembly did not get the expected response from government and other organizations early. He said for about six years now, government had not allocated any relief items to the NADMO office in Bongo and that made it impossible for the Assembly to respond speedily to victims of disasters.
The DCE warned the victims against selling the relief items, noting that, such an act would amount to a total waste of government’s efforts in supporting them during this critical time of their lives.
Mr Ayamga said the Bongo district is located within a storm belt and that in the past few years, communities such as Awiisi, Sooboko and Namoo, among others, suffer most any time there is a storm, adding that, the good news was that so far no fatalities have been recorded in the disasters.
The DCE advised communities within the storm belt to use building materials that can withstand such storms for their houses as well as engaging the services of professional builders.
Receiving the items on behalf of the victims, Mr Daniel Awunga, Headmaster of the Soe Senior High School thanked the Assembly and NADMO for the support and said, the gesture would go a long way to alleviate their plight.
Meanwhile, the DCE has formally presented a brand new Nissan pick-up vehicle to the District’s Department of Agriculture to help in the effective implementation of the government’s flagship agric intervention plan, the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme.
