MONROVIA, July 11 (LINA) – The Executive Director of National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), Henry O. Williams, has called on President George Manneh Weah to constitute a taskforce to tackle waste management across the country in order to help prevent health disasters.
“Waste management is a cardinal issue that needs to be given keen attention, if not it may give rise to cholera, malaria and other diseases,” Williams indicated.
Speaking at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing in Monrovia on Thursday, Williams called on the government, citizens and residents to give disaster management key consideration because it has the propensity to lead to a national problem.
Williams also wants national and international partners to work collectively in mitigating all forms of disaster risks in the country.
According to him, children and poor people are the ones who get affected most during disasters and, as such, there is a need for collective work aimed at tackling disaster risks.
He disclosed that the NDMA recently signed an agreement with the World Food Program (WFP) through which state-of-the-art instruments were provided to the agency for data collection.
Williams, however, indicated that the NDMA has also introduced a Disaster Risk Management platform which, according to him, is aimed at strengthening the agency’s preparedness to respond to emergencies as well as building the response system to effectively manage the impact of disaster.
