BUCHANAN, July 21 (LINA) – A 72-year-old man identified as Oldman Coplah Nelson has died after falling from a palm tree in Boeglay Town, Statutory District #3 ‘A’ in Grand Bassa County.
Boeglay Town is about an hour’s drive from the Liberia Agriculture Company (LAC) Hospital with a deplorable road network.
According to Mr. Mondyu Markfitch Garmondeh, the Senior Chief of Boeglay Town, the incident occurred on Monday, July 13, 2020.
Mr. Garmondeh told the Liberia News Agency (LINA) that immediately after receiving the information, residents of the town rushed the victim to the Boeglay Town Clinic for swift medical treatment.
The Chief said old man Nelson was later referred to the LAC Hospital where it was confirmed that the victim died while en route to the medical facility.
Recently, the intervention of doctors and nurses at the hospital saved the life of another patient identified as James D. Jacobs who also fell from a palm tree in the same district.
A resident of Boeglay Town, Mr. G. Isaac Garmondeh, who was near the scene, said the incident happened not far from his farm.
According to him, while on his farm on Monday afternoon; he heard a usual sound as though a palm cutter had dropped a bunch of palm nuts, but later someone began screaming for help, leading him to rush to the scene.
Garmondeh stated that while on the way he saw Old man Nelson lying on the ground, and when he questioned him, the victim said he had fallen from a palm tree.
Garmondeh noted that when he raised alarm, some ladies who had gone to fetch firewood heard him and came over to assist in rushing the victim to town.
Meanwhile, the eldest son of the late old man Nelson, Emmanuel Nelson, explained in tears that his father lived his life as a palm cutter, and had not had any « unfortunate situation of such nature.”
« I am surprised to hear that my father died as a result of such accident, » Emmanuel said in a tearful state.
It was also revealed by some residents of Boeglay Town that the deceased was a citizen of Rivercess County who lived in that part of Grand Bassa County from his youth.
In June this year, an elderly man identified as James Droglen Jacobs fell from a palm tree during which a large stick penetrated the upper left side of his chest very close to his heart.
He underwent a life-saving surgery at the LAC Hospital and is now alive in the area.
