Ateiku (W/R), March 15, GNA – Residents of the Wassa-East District of the Western Region on Friday appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to asphalt the six-kilometre Wassa Brofoyedru-Ateiku Road to accelerate economic growth.
They said the deplorable nature of the road, which got worse during the rainy season, affects the movement of goods and services, leading to economic stagnation of the area.
Mr Kwame Tawiah, the Assemblyman for Ateiku, made the appeal on behalf of residents during the first Town Hall Meeting of the Ateiku Area Council in the Western Region.
He said residents of farming communities along that stretch found it difficult to cart their farm produce to the market centres due to the bad nature of the road.
The Chief of Eseneso, Nana Yaw Gyesi, appealed to the Government to tar the road to open up the area to other districts in the Western, Central and Ashanti regions to enhance development.
Mr Wilson Arthur, the District Chief Executive of Wassa-East, said the road was awarded on contract to Messrs JUSTMOH Company Ltd in 2016 but could not complete the project.
He said government had re-awarded it to the same contractor, as part of a one-billion Chinese loan, to spearhead infrastructural development of some districts.
Mr Arthur said the Daboase-Ateiku Road provided the shortest route to the Central and Ashanti regions and that government would ensure the contractor completed work on time.
