Praia, Dec 13 (Inforpress) – The Cabo Verdean Music Society (SCM) welcomes the rise of the morna to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and considers this recognition by UNESCO as a “very special moment” for the entire Cabo Verdean nation.
“Morna, as a musical expression, mirrors the soul of the Cabo Verdean people and takes the country’s identity across borders contagiously, as our greatest Morna Ambassador, the sublime and sweet voice Diva CesáriaÉvora, has surely experienced this intrinsic and extraordinary particularity that Morna offers,” reads SCM’s press release.
For SCM, “this well-deserved consecration” is of transcendental importance and reflects the reinforcement of the Cabo Verdean nation’s union around this musical genre, the reinforcement of national identity, imposed by the transversality of morna in all Cabo Verdean islands, in the diaspora and in the world.
“SCM has no doubt that this consecration is a consequence of Cabo Verdean’s creative capacity and, therefore, also a magnificent gain for its own legal protection and the deserved respect for copyright that will undoubtedly be reinforced,” the documents says.
