Accra, June 23, GNA- The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has denied claims that it has issued two vehicles with the same registration number.
This follows a photograph on social media of two vehicles; a white Nissan Rogue Sports Utility (SUV) and a Black Range Rover SUV, bearing the same registration number plate, GR 2050-20, affixed on them.
Reacting to the said photograph in a press statement issued on Tuesday and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the authority said, while it could confirm the registration of the white Nissan Rogue SUV as in consonance with Road Traffic regulation, it has no knowledge of any registration of the Black Range Rover.
The authority said it has therefore commenced investigations into the circumstance that led to the violation of the road traffic law, adding that it would not hesitate in its efforts to bring the perpetrators to face the full rigours of the law as these infractions had safety and security implications to road users.
It has also urged the owner of the said Black Range Rover SUV, to visit any of the Authority’s offices to regularize the process for a genuine registration number plate.
It further reminded vehicle owners and the public that a person shall not drive a motor vehicle or trailer unless it is registered.
“The Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683) Section 41(1) states that a person who uses or keeps a motor vehicle or trailer not being an exempt motor vehicle on a road when particulars of the motor or trailer have not been entered in the register maintained by the Licensing Authority, commits an offence and is liable for a summary conviction to a fine not exceeding 250 penalty units or a term of imprisonment not exceeding 12 months or to both,” the authority stated.
It said, as a regulatory Authority tasked with the responsibility to provide a regulated framework for an enhanced and effective administration of drivers and vehicles, it remained focused to ensure best practices for licensing drivers and vehicles, to promote road safety.
“The public is hereby advised to contact DVLA offices across the country to assess any of its services and not transact business with unauthorised persons.”
