GBARNGA, Aug. 9 (LINA) – The C.B Dunbar Maternity Hospital in Gbarnga, Bong County which has operated for over a decade is expected to shortly transition to a comprehensive medical center.

This revelation was made in Gbarnga over the weekend by the newly-assigned Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Santa Barbu, during the official turning over of the office by the outgoing Medical Director, Dr. Kowu Emma Giah.

According to Dr. Barbu, CB Dunbar is located in a county located in the central region that has very high population and, as such, the hospital should be transformed into a « comprehensive medical center » to serve not only women and children.

She said when this is done the hospital will adequately address the complex health needs of all inhabitants of the county, and not women alone.

The medical director, however, pointed out that this can only be achieved through teamwork and support from central government, the Bong County Legislative Caucus, the staff themselves, as well as community members.

At the same time, Madam Barbu has pledged that her primary focus will be directed at a more community engagement approach to identify medical problems faced by residents and employ meaningful solutions to tackle the problems rather than just sitting in the office to work.

In her departure speech, outgoing CB Dunbar Maternal Hospital Medical

Director, Dr. Kowu Emma Giah, lauded government for her preferment to serve the country in the health sector.

According to Dr. Giah, it was an opportunity for her to work in rural Liberia for the first time following graduation from the medical school.

« Let me say thank you to the government and all my fellow workers. Since three and half years, though there were challenges, my success was through the support of every one of you, » she said.

With the vision of the newly-assigned Medical Director, Dr. Barbu to upgrade CB Dunbar Maternal Hospital to a comprehensive health center, residents of Bong County are hopeful of benefiting from improved healthcare services under the Weah-led administration.

CB Dunbar Maternal Hospital caters to at least 15 child birth cases daily, a nurse who works at the hospital told the Liberia News Agency recently in Gbarnga.

It also attends to maternity vases from Bong, Lofa, Nimba, and Margibi counties as well as neighboring Guinea.
