Sekondi (W/R), June 26, GNA – A-13-member newly-constituted Board of Governors for the Sekondi College has been inaugurated to steer the affairs of the institution for a three-year term.
It has Mrs Rebecca Afiba Dadzie, a former Western Regional Director of Education, representing the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), as Chairperson.
The members are Mrs Felicia Agyeibea Okai, Western Regional Director of Education, Reverend Mrs Elizabeth Akuoku, Metro Director of Education, Mrs Guddy A. Ampomah Kermah, Headmistress of the School, Madam Mercy Quashie, representative of the Municipal Chief Executive, and Nana Kofi Abuna V, representing Historic interest.
The other members are Mr Samuel A. Adinkra, Legal interest representative, Mrs Adwowa Munkua Dako and Dr Dan Amoah, Old Students representatives, Mr Nyarkoh Asare-Kane, non-teaching representative, Mr Samuel Adinkra, staff representative and Mr Kingsley Yankey, an Assistant Headmaster.
They were sworn in by Justice Mrs Hannah Taylor, a Supervising High Court Judge, who administered the Oath of Office, Allegiance and Secrecy.
Justice Taylor urged the Board members to be diligent and conscientious in the task ahead to place the College on a high pedestal.
Mrs Agyeibea Okai, the Regional Director of Education, lauded efforts of the outgoing Board for the sacrifices of members to advance the cause of the College and tasked the new Board to bring its expertise to bear on achieving quality education delivery towards attainment of the Sustainable Development Goal–Four.
She urged the Board to define its roles and assist the Management to instil discipline into the students as a benchmark for higher academic laurels.
She asked it to submit an annual report to the Director-General on the state of the College.
Mrs Okai bemoaned anti-social behaviours such as occultism and substance abuse plaguing some second cycle institutions in the country and urged the Board to nip any such acts in the bud.
She lauded Management and staff for their sense of professionalism and dedication to nurture the students into responsible adulthood.
Mrs Guddy Ampomah Kermah, the Headmistress of the College, said established in 1951, the Sekondi College was poised to excel and had trained distinguished scholars serving in high positions in the country.
She commended the outgoing Board for its sacrifices and noble efforts to ensure the well-being of the school.
The Chairman of the outgoing Board and a former Metro Director of Education, Mr Ayyub M. Morgan, commended the Old Students Association, the GES, and the STMA among others for their support in the smooth running of the College.
The Board, he said, contributed to the vision of the College through higher academic standards, discipline, infrastructural projects, sports, and agriculture among others.
He said the new Board would be confronted with the challenges of the Free Senior High School and COVID-19 and encouraged it to be pragmatic, while urging it to make accommodation of staff a pressing need on its agenda.
Mrs Dadzie, Chairperson of the Board, on behalf of the members, assured the College of their commitment to continuing with the good work started by their predecessors.
She called for cooperation from all stakeholders, especially staff and students, to discharge their mandate diligently.
Osabarima Kwaw Entsie II, the Omanhene of Mpohor Traditional Area, who chaired the function, said the College was in dire need of a generator, a new dormitory, fence wall, and toilet facilities to meet the ever increasing demands.
He appealed to the Regional Director of Education to address those concerns to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
