GANTA, Sept. 3 (LINA) – The Head of the Women and Children Protection Section of the Liberia National Police Ganta Detail, Jenkins Mangou, has identified « massive » awareness as one of the important tools in the fight against rape.
Speaking to the Liberia News Agency in the county, Mangou stated that rape cases in the country are being reported unlike in the past due to the « massive » awareness that is being raised on the act.
The LNP Women and Children Protection boss for Ganta claimed rape cases that were once kept under carpet by family members are now reported on a daily basis due to the continuous education and awareness about the danger of rape.
He wants said efforts to continue to end rape in Liberia.
The local WACPS Commander has praised anti rape protests and advocacy groups for helping to create awareness about rape.
According to him, the recent protests across the country as well as efforts from other advocacy groups have immensely educated citizens about the psychological and social effects of rape,
Officer Mangou observed that through those protests and advocacies against rape and other forms of Sexual Gender Based Violence cases are frequently being reported now-a-days.
According to Mangou, police statistics shows that citizens are reporting rape and SGBV cases more than those being swept under the carpet or compromised due to the education they (citizens) are receiving on the danger in compromising SGBV cases.
« Presently, we can say our people are doing well when it comes to reporting SGBV cases now than in the past and it’s because of the education they are getting, » Mangou asserted.
He reported that from March till the time of this report, the Ganta Police Detachment has recorded 12 rape cases.
Of the number of cases, Mangou stated that nine have been investigated and forwarded to court for trial, while the remaining three are still under investigation.
