Accra, June 6, GNA – Some residents of Ashaiman Lebanon and its environs have appealed to the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) to widen drains in the area to contain flash flood.

According to them the drains in Lebanon Zone five, and Newtown junction were too narrow to contain the high volume of rain water which often lead to flooding of the area.

They told the Ghana News Agency that the contractor who worked on the drains in the area created only one outlet leading to its overflow during the rainy season.

Mr Dickson Amposah, Assembly member for the Nii Kometey Electoral Area, said the Assembly was working on the flood situation in the area.

Mr Amposah acknowledged that instead of connecting the outlet of the drain from Community 22 to the storm drain, the contractor rather channelled it to smaller gutters in Lebanon Zone five.

The GNA on Sunday June 3, noticed that some parts of Lebanon Zone five and the New Town junction as well as the roads got flooded after it rained heavily for about an hour causing serious vehicular traffic as vehicles were forced to slow down in a bid to avoid the open drains.

Some residents who were returning from church service got stranded as they waded through the flood to get to their homes.

While the rain was pouring heavily, some residents also waded through it just to dump their garbage into the drains, a usual practice in Ashaiman which is largely responsible for its choked and smelly gutters.
