Sogakope (VR), Nov. 12, GNA – Mr Christian Agordah, Head of Monitoring and Evaluation at the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), said Ghana could be on top of youth unemployment if it had paid attention to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
He said in 2006, the International Labour Organization (ILO) advocated for vocational education, saying it provided wages and self- employment for the youth; adding, national development could not be fully attained in the absence of technical and vocational education and training.
Mr. Agordah said this at the 30th anniversary celebration of Tongu Youth And Children Evangel (TOYACE), a Non Governmental Organization (NGO), into Technical, Vocational Technology and Entrepreneurship at Sogakope in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The event, which was on the theme: « Forging ahead after 30 years of sacrificial community services », coincided with the graduation of students from the Organization’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) department.
Mr Agordah said about 80 per cent of jobs in the country involved TVET skills, hence, any effort directed towards development of TVET, would mean improving the standards of living of the citizens, because TVET equipped the people with the requisite knowledge, skills and the ability to set up their own businesses and also link them with adequate employment opportunities.
He said unlike the past where TVET was confined to trades like welding, carpentry among others, its scope had expanded to encompass a wider range of job functions as such computer network management, floral designing, paralegal training, tourism management, cosmetology, and healthcare among others.
Mr. Bestway Zottor, the Founder of TOYACE, said his motivation was in the difference the organization was making in the lives of people in the catchment area.
He said the organization lacked computers in its Information Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory and was affecting effective teaching and learning.
A total of 14 students graduated and were awarded with certificates.
