Bawku (UE), Oct 30, GNA – The Bawku Senior High School Old Students Association (BOSA) at the weekend held its second edition of homecoming and resolved to construct a guest house and office complex for the Association.
The two projects, which are estimated to cost about GHC175,000.00 would be constructed on the school’s campus.
In addition to these projects, the Association promised to also rehabilitate one of the school staff bungalows which was in a deplorable state.
The event, which is celebrated every year, brought together past students of the school including; Mr Joseph Kpemka, the Deputy Attorney General, Professor Thomas Akabzaa, the former Chief Director of the Ministry of Energy, Mr Lawrence Apaalse, the Chief Director of Energy and Petroleum among others.
The event afforded the old students the opportunity to renew acquaintances and to reflect on the needs of the school and how they could pool resources to address those challenges to improve on academic work.
The theme for this year’s celebration was, « addressing the contemporary challenges of our youth, the role of our alumni ».
Mr Bernard Atinga, the National President of BOSA indicated that the Association had renewed its commitments to providing significant support to the school to improve on teaching and learning among teachers and students.
He explained that the guest house when constructed would enable members to have easy access to accommodation whenever they visited the school which would also serve as revenue earning channel for the school to be used to address some of the needs of the school, while the office space would allow the Association to carry out its activities effectively.
He urged past students of the school, especially the younger ones to join the Association which had its members in every region to contribute to shape the future of the students.
Mr Sylvester Agalga, the Assistant Headmaster in charge of Administration of the school who delivered the school’s situational report on behalf of Mr Augustine Ayirezang, the Acting Headmaster of the school and Upper East Regional Director of Education commended the old students for their immense contributions towards the development of the school over the years.
According to the Acting Headmaster, the school currently had student population of 2,275 students, 132 teaching staff and 69 non-teaching staff, and said the school was stressed up with the non- teaching component of staff in the areas of security, labour, cooks and pantry as well as laboratory and library assistants.
He noted that the school had enough classrooms to accommodate the students, and said the school was challenged with the issue of inadequate furniture and staff accommodation as most of the bungalows were in a deplorable state and needed urgent renovations.
He therefore appealed to the old students to assist the school with furniture, renovate the staff accommodations and assist to complete two abandoned flats with the capacity to house about 12 families each.
« Currently, the ICT lab can only boast of 13 serviceable computers and 18 laptops. This is woefully inadequate to serve the school which has a student population close to 2,300 and more than hundred staff, » the Regional Director stressed.
Zug-Raan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the Overlord of the Bawku Traditional Area, expressed the hope that the school would continue to produce great people who would influence society positively.
The old students used the occasion to honour some individuals among them with citations for their immense contributions towards the development of the school and the country at large.
The Assistant Headmaster of Administration was awarded with a citation for being the longest serving staff of the school, while the Overlord of Bawku was awarded for his support and contribution towards the development of the school and the community.
