MONROVIA, June 18 (LINA) – The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) has embarked on a nationwide research with focus on the right to health for citizens and residents of Liberia.
The INCHR was established by an Act of Legislature in 2005 as a national human rights institution mandated to promote and protect
people’s rights in Liberia.
Making the disclosure on ECOWAS Radio at the weekend, the acting Head of the institution, Bartholomew B. Colley, said the INCHR’s 2018
research is basically on healthcare, focusing on the 15 counties in Liberia.
Colley noted that the INCHR research is basically based on a report on the shortage of drugs in health facilities across the country, supply
of drugs to hospitals, shortage of ambulances, and lack of medical equipment at health facilities, among others.
According to him, INCHR as a national human rights institution, consistent with the Paris Principles, is mandated to promote human
rights by ensuring that national development plans and the budget are linked to fulfill basic human rights in Liberia.
« This is only possible when policy makers recognize the vital role of human rights and the need to strengthen the capacity of the INCHR as
an international obligation and a national priority, » he said.
INCHR’s role is to promote the protection and defense of human rights, fundamental freedoms, good governance, and the rule of law and sustain advocacy.
