Kadjebi (O/R), June 1GNA-Mr. Seth Seyram Deh, the Kadjebi District Director of Education, has appealed to Ghanaians, especially children to uphold Ghanaian values.
Mr Deh said values such as patriotism, nationhood, unity, national cohesion, loyalty to the state, and hardwork were positive values which engendered good character development among children. He said such positive values would contribute significantly to national development and the success of democratic governance.
Mr Deh, who was represented by the Chief Inspector of Schools, Mr Gabriel Sekeh, made these statements at the observation of this year’s Citizenship Week Celebration with basic school pupils at Kadjebi in the Oti Region.
He called on them to be agents for socio-cultural, economic, and political development as well as technological innovators in current dispensation.
The Director of Education said their imagination, ideas and energies were essential for the continuous development of societies.
Mr Deh, who spoke under the theme: “Sustaining our democracy, Ghanaian values in practice: the role of the child,” advised the children to be sincere, just, and fair, honest, decent and decorum in language and be disciplined both in private and public life.
He said the Ghanaian child had a critical role to play in the enjoyment of their rights and exercise of their constitutional responsibilities as citizen under the current dispensation and conscious efforts must be made to enable them to develop good character traits in their development.
He said in the development process, they needed to have strong and relevant laws that would create strong identity in the child, nation and culture identity that could serve as a catalyst to turn them into good and mature citizens.
“Unfortunately, the Ghanaian child, however, found him or herself in an identity crisis due to foreign culture,” he added.
Mr Daniel Agbesi Latsu, the Kadjebi District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), called on the youth in school to help educate Ghanaians on the values, principles, and objectives of the 1992 Constitution.
He said understanding of the Constitution enabled citizens to know the rules, demands and ethics of Democratic Party politics. He said adequate knowledge on the Constitution would also enable the electorate to participate fully in the processes involved in the governance of the country at all levels.
The NCCE introduced Citizenship Week Celebration as part of the Annual Constitution celebration in 2012.
The Citizenship Week Celebration seeks to remind basic school pupils of their responsibilities as active citizens, and their role to build a strong, vibrant, and democratic Ghana.
The Kadjebi District Office of the NCCE observed the week with pupils in 28 basic schools in the district and distributed copies of the 1992 Constitution to them.
