MONROVIA, March 10 (LINA) – Following a brief lull in his aggressive inspection and monitoring of several community-based pro-poor projects, President George Manneh Weah has stepped up the exercise which is intended to motivate contractors, prevent complacency and meet completion deadlines.
On Friday, March 8, the President toured several projects under construction in and around Monrovia, accompanied by the new India Ambassador accredited near Monrovia, Mr. Sailas Thangal.
The tour took the President and entourage to Logan Town Broad Street, Sawmill/Bali Island Road as well as the 14 Military Hospital projects, according to a presidential press release issued in Monrovia.
In Logan Town, the President trekked the long stretch of paved road swarmed by jubilant banners-carrying and flags-waving residents apparently showing appreciation to him for paving the road which was in a very deplorable state for decades.
« George Weah! George Weah! George Weah, our president! Thank you and let God bless you, » the hysteric crowd roared.
Some women spread lappas in the middle of the road for the President to walk on, a typical Liberian traditional way of expressing love and appreciation for extraordinary works.
The President later visited the Sawmill road project and the 14 Military Hospital, which is being roofed.
Addressing reporters at the end of the tour, India Ambassador Thangal said he was highly overwhelmed and touched by the outpour of love for President Weah who, he said, is working to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of his people.
« I am very happy to be here with the President inspecting these projects, and it is very heart-warming for me to see Liberians cheering the president, » Ambassador Thangal said.
The Indian envoy observed that the expressions on the faces of Liberians who came out to appreciate President Weah confirmed that he is really loved by his people and that he loves his people whose needs he’s providing.
He said: « Most of the projects I have seen are geared toward lifting the downtrodden people and that he is working for the downtrodden people of his country. »
Ambassador Thangal said though India is a developing country, it would do everything within its reach to assist President Weah achieve his development plan under the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD).
The government of India is expected to develop Bali Island into a state-of-the-art conference center to be named after that country’s Independence leader and famous Nobel Laureate, Mahatma Gandhi.
The latest tour is the second to be conducted by the President in the New Year, to ensure that those who are given the Liberian people’s money for projects are up to the task and are working in line with schedule.
