Addis Ababa, 09/12/2022 (MAP) – The Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the African Union (AU) and UNECA, Mohamed Arrouchi, reaffirmed, in Algeria’s Oran, that a better coordination between the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) and the African non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (A3) is necessary in order to strengthen the voice of Africa within the UN Security Council on issues of common interest to African states.
Arrouchi, who was speaking at the 9th High Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, held from 7 to 9 December, recalled in this context that in the exercise of its mandate of promoting and maintaining peace, security and stability in Africa, the AU PSC cooperates and works closely with the UN Security Council, which has the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
It is within this framework that the AU-PSC also cooperates and works closely with the relevant UN institutions for the promotion of peace, security and stability in Africa, the Moroccan diplomat added.
The Moroccan delegation reiterated that the AU-PSC and the A3 have the imperative to defend the noble causes of Africa and the vital interests of the African citizen in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter conferring on the Security Council the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
Arrouchi is leading the Moroccan delegation at this seminar which focuses on « Disarmament and Control of Illicit Small Arms and Light Weapons: Silencing Arms in Africa », « African Responses to Emerging Threats to Peace and Security on the Continent – Tackling the Scourge of Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa », « Imposition and Enforcement of Sanctions by International Organizations and Partners on AU Member States », and « The AU-PSC and A3: Better Coordination to Strengthen Africa’s Voice in the UN Security Council ».
