MONROVIA, Jan. 28 (LINA) – The National Transit Authority (NTA) has released 10 brand new TATA buses to ply the streets of Montserrado County free of charge to ease the burden of transportation cost for commuters covering a 21-day period.

It can be recalled that on November 29, 2019 that the government of India provided 45 brand new TATA buses to Liberia to help bring relief to about 2.6 million commuters whose destinations, according to NTA, are facilitated by public transportation.

Speaking in an interview with the Liberia News Agency (LINA) on Tuesday, NTA Managing Director, Herbie T. McCauley, said « the President mandated the NTA to provide free ride for commuters for three weeks, so therefore I am taking his instruction and doing what he mandated me to do. »

He said, the President George Manneh Weah is concerned about the well-being of all citizens, citing that the free ride is not limited to a specific group of people or a specific religion.

« The free ride doesn’t matter who you are or what your status is in society, neither your political affiliation nor religion, anyone who is available at the various bus stops can ride the bus, » McCauley explained.

He indicated that additional buses will be added tomorrow as today is just the first phase of the exercise, adding that the buses will be able to serve the people and ease growing tension amidst the shortage of gasoline on the Liberia market.

According to him, the buses will run from Somalia Drive to Broad street; Broad Street to Red Light; Duala to Broad Street, among other destinations.

« I strongly believe that this morning the citizens will have smiles on their faces because of this gesture by the President to the people, » he stressed.

In the midst of the free ride, hundreds of citizens rejoiced and thanked the President for providing the opportunity in the midst of the shortage of gasoline and recent hike in the transportation fares.

James Davis, one of the beneficiaries of the free ride this morning said: « Now we are enjoying the fruit of our vote, thank you very much President Weah, I will have no regret in casting my vote for you next election. »

Another beneficiary Esther Johnson said « I knew you could bring the change that I needed, this is why I voted you and will continue to support your leadership to the end, thank you Liberia’s best President. »

As the buses headed to town, many Liberians on them and along the way shouted slogans and praises to President, committing their support to his leadership.
