Accra, Nov. 24, GNA – The Tema Regional Office of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) has expressed its commitment to collaborate with the Metropolitan Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to promote quality education at all levels in the Tema Metropolis.
The partnership, which seeks to among others, improve the educational sector and open it up with other stakeholders, is in line with the Agency’s mission of gathering and disseminating truthful and unbiased news reports for national development.
This was made known when Mr Francis Ameyibor, GNA Tema Regional Manager, paid a courtesy call on the Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs Bernice Ofori.
The visit afforded both parties the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas in the educational sector, areas of shared interest and the possibilities of strengthening the already existing bond between the Agency and the GES.
Mr Ameyibor said GNA is pursuing a proactive mandate to open up its news gathering efforts, “we are now moving away from the old paradigm of over concentration on scheduled assignments, we must intensify our mandate to hunt for stories.
“We are now developing new crop of staff who are hungry for news, going to the local levels to hunt for news, we are entering into partnership communication and other activities that the media over the years have neglected especially the informal sector”.
The GNA Tema Regional Manager said along with the tenets of the development communication, “we are building and renewing partnership with state and private institutions in the gathering and dissemination of credible and balanced news reports ultimately geared at promoting national development”.
He said “because there hadn’t been such close relationships with state institutions, some of them have no idea of GNA’s mandate in the media landscape” adding that with the proliferation of new media particularly with its attendant fake news, national communication drive must refocused on the government’s wire service – GNA for credible news”.
Mr Ameyibor said the collaboration was appropriate for the sharing of information in an effort to promote quality education for national development and societal transformation.
He said unlike the private media which thrives mainly on commercialised news, “the GNA is a critical partner in national development and will not place financial interest over national interest. We will continue to champion the values of truthful, impartiality and professionalism”.
Mrs Bernice Ofori, Municipal Director of Education, who expressed delight at the renewed partnership, said inclusive and equitable education remains the key in promoting sustainable national development.
She said sports and culture in schools has had little attention over the time and called on the media to divert attention in that area to help develop talents from the basic level.
Mrs Ofori commended the GNA for initiating partnership communication and pledged to work together with the agency towards national development.
