3,510 security personnel deployed in Central Region for Election 2020
Cape Coast, Dec. 6, GNA – A total of 3,510 security personnel have been deployed across the Central Region to ensure law and order during the December 7 General Election.
The number comprise the Police, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Bureau of National Investigations, Prisons and some personnel from the 64 Military Regiment, among other security services, with the mandate to ensure peaceful election.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Irene Oppong, Regional Public Relation Officer of the Ghana Police Service, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Cape Coast.
She said all logistics and equipment to help the personnel carry out their duties had been provided.
DSP Oppong said it was their topmost priority to provide security for all including officials of the Electoral Commission, polling agents, the electorate and citizens in general adding that they remained committed to maintaining peace and order, before, during, and after the elections.
She said apart from the joint mobile operation team that would be ready to assist any polling station or constituency in need of help, some military personnel had also been assigned to certain polling stations identified as high risk areas.
« The enthusiasm and zeal we have exhibited today depicts our readiness to professionally execute our mandate. This is not the time to show our preference to any party, our preference is Ghana,” she said.
“I want to assure the public that we will be impartial in dealing with miscreants to ensure peace because that is our duty and that is what we have been called to do. »
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Habiba Twumasi-Sarpong, the Regional Police Commander, noted that the peace and security of the country were in the hands of the security personnel and challenged them to prove equal to the task.
She expressed the hope that the country would remain peaceful and united after the elections.
The Regional Commander urged the security personnel to remain neutral and carry out their task with professionalism.
