MONROVIA, Jan. 25(LINA) – President George Manneh Weah has extolled the newly-elected officials of both Houses of the 54th National Legislature who were elected December 8 in a by-election.

The by-election was the mid-term poll for 15 Senatorial seats nationwide and two vacant Representative seats created by the demise of two legislators from Montserrado and Sinoe Counties.

President Weah was speaking at the Capitol Building Monday in keeping with Article 58 of the revised Constitution of 1986 which states that: « The President shall on the fourth working Monday in January of each year present the administration’s legislative program for the ensuring session and shall once a year report to the legislature on the state of the Republic.

“In presenting the economic condition of the Republic, the report shall cover expenditure as well as income,” the provision states.

Addressing the joint session of the National Legislature, President Weah urged the new-elected lawmakers from both Houses to work in the best interest of the Liberian people while exercising their constitutional mandates.

« I want to congratulate all elected officials from the Senatorial and Representative by-election which was held on December 8, 2020 to this August body,” he said, adding “Some of you were able to retain their seats while others are new to the Capitol Building. »
