Tema, June 21, GNA – The Ghana Federation of the Disabled (FDA), Ashaiman branch at the weekend joined the Green Ghana project by engaging in tree planting exercise in the median of the Ashaiman main road.

About 65 disabled made up of the physically disabled, those with cerebral palsy, and the deaf planted the trees including coconut and guava among others from the Ashaiman roundabout to the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly’s (ASHMA) junction.

The tree planting was done in collaboration with ProHumane Afrique International with sponsorship from Kingdom Exim Group and Kings Air Travel and Tours.

Mr Courage Wormenor, President of the GFD, Ashaiman Branch said members of the Federation embraced the call from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to go green, therefore their resolve to join other Ghanaians to plant trees as it was an important venture.

Mr Wormenor added that it was also to demonstrate to the public that even though they lived with some disability, it does not mean they cannot be part of state policies.

He urged policymakers to always engage them when formulating policies to make it workable for them as he revealed that public institutions were still operating in environments that were not friendly to the disabled even though there were regulations on them.

Nii Annang Adjor, Regent of Ashaiman who joined the Persons With Disability (PWD) to plant the trees urged the Assembly and the institutions behind the planting to ensure that it was well catered for to derive the benefit of the exercise.

Nii Adjor further urged ASHMA to clear all road reservations of containers and other structures and replace them with trees to beautify the principal streets of the municipality as well as provide unpolluted air for residents in the area.

Mrs Baptista Sarah Gebu, Executive Director of ProHumane Afrique said they aimed to plant about 400 trees from the Ashaiman roundabout through to Adjei-Kojo as their contribution towards creating awareness on climate change effects on humans.

She said the organization believed that the disabled can engage in the tree planting exercise therefore their decision to collaborate with them to participate in the Green Ghana project.

Mrs Iftin Mills, General Executive Manager, Kingdom Exim, and Ms Sabita Rathor, Chief Operating Officer of KingsAir Travel and Tours, on their part said their institution decided to fund the exercise as their support to the disabled reiterating that they were capable of doing exploits than people thought.

They called on the society to participate in the Green Ghana project by planting a tree in their homes and areas.

Officials of the National Commission for Civic Education, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), and the Social Welfare and Community Development were present to support the disabled to plant the trees.
