Prof Bagah wins UWR Council of State elections
Wa, (UW/R), Feb. 12, GNA-Professor Daniel Anlieu-Mwini Bagah has won the Council of State Election in the Upper West Region to represent the region.
He polled 21 out of the 22 delegates who voted, while Kuoro Bareche Nlowie Baninye II had one vote.
Other persons who contested the election were; Mr Paschal Dere, Mr Abubakari Sadik Muhaisen and Mr Emmanuel K. Mwinila-Yuori.
The election started at about 1000 hours and ended at about 1100 hours.
Prof. Bagah expressed gratitude to the delegates for the confidence reposed in him and assured that he would maximise his vast experience, particularly in the education sector, for the benefit of the region and the nation in general.
He urged the other candidates to support him with their ideas and knowledge so that together they could develop the region.
Kuoro Baninye II, had contested and lost the Council of State election for three consecutive time now, described the contest as political, alleging that the Electoral College was not representative enough.
“If you are to get someone to represent the region in such a position, then it should not be political”, he observed, adding that he would not give up until he got the opportunity to represent to develop the region.
Mr Dere also commended Prof. Bagah for emerging victorious in the contest, but was hopeful that he would use that position to impact the region and the nation at large.
There was heavy security presence at the election, which was characterised by widespread speculations of allegations of deliberate conspiracy to rig the election stemming from the constitution of the Electoral College.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) gathered that Mr Gervase Dogkotenge Maalonghae, an Assembly Member of the Jirapa Municipal Assembly sought court injunction on the election on Thursday, February 11, 2020 on grounds that the selection of representatives of the Assembly to vote was unconstitutional.
However, Mr Ali Osman, the Upper West Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), said he had not received any injunction letter on the election hence the need to go ahead and conduct the exercise.
